THE ADETICKET FIELD GUIDE

Make random groups that fit your room

Grouper divides a list into random groups with similar numbers of people. Use it for discussion tables, activity teams or a quick game-night draw.

Start with a list you can check

  1. Enter one participant per line. Blank lines are ignored.
  2. Review repeated names. If two different people share a name, use a distinguishing label such as “Alex R” and “Alex T,” or confirm that repeated entries really are separate participants.
  3. Uncheck anyone sitting out. Their name remains in the list but is omitted from that draw.
  4. Choose a number of groups or a maximum group size, then optionally enter group names, one per line.

A misspelled name is still an entry. Check the participant count against the people actually present before randomizing.

Choose the split that matches your constraint

Number of groups is useful when you have a fixed number of tables, facilitators or team stations. Maximum group size is useful when each activity can handle only a limited number of people.

Worked examples with 17 participants
Your choiceResulting sizesWhy
4 groups5, 4, 4, 4All 17 people fit into four groups; sizes differ by no more than one.
Maximum size 44, 4, 3, 3, 3Five groups are needed to stay below the limit, then people are spread evenly.
Maximum size 66, 6, 5Three groups are enough.

Maximum size is a ceiling, not a promise that every group will be full. If only 16 of your 17 names are included, the calculation uses 16.

Reveal the draw at your own pace

Choose a shuffle animation and either a step-by-step draw or an automatic reveal. Select Randomize groups to begin. With the step-by-step option, use Draw next for each name or Reveal remaining to finish. Turn animation off when you want a quick result. Shuffle sounds are optional and start off.

The app shuffles participants and divides the result into groups. “Balanced” refers to the number of people, not their experience, age, ability or relationships. Grouper does not collect those attributes and cannot guarantee an even skill mix.

Agree on redraws first

If a participant arrives late, update the included list and make a new draw. A reshuffle can change everyone’s group. If your event needs fixed captains or particular people kept apart, arrange those constraints separately; Grouper does not provide those rules.

Share the result and keep a copy

Use Copy results to paste the groups into a message or document, or Print for a paper copy. Review the output before sharing: omitted participants can appear in the copied result too. Choose labels that people can recognize without exposing unnecessary personal information.

Grouper does not upload or save participant lists. Keep a copy of any result you need before closing the page. Your browser may restore unfinished form text after reopening a tab; on a shared device, use Clear form when finished and check the page before handing it over.

Common fixes

Repeated-name warning
Remove an accidental duplicate or confirm that every repeated line belongs to a separate person. Names differing only by capitalization are also flagged.
Too many groups
Choose no more groups than included participants. A list of eight included people cannot make nine nonempty groups.
Too many group labels
Supply no more labels than the resulting group count. Unnamed groups receive numbered labels.
Copy does not work
Your browser may restrict clipboard access. Select the visible result manually or use Print.
